A VICTORIAN BUILDING
Located within the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area, this project significantly remodels and extends an end-of-terrace Victorian building. It creates a contemporary, airy and bright single family home. The use of daylight has been central to the project and sunlight penetrates deep into the ground floor and basement of the house. A series of sequential ‘cuts’ and ‘extrusions’ interplay with daylight and views to create a strong sense of movement through the house.
A large void is carved out, intersecting all four floors. The design incorporates a deep staircase that encourages a pleasant spiral motion. This sense of movement is maintained through the design of the balustrades on the terraces in the rear extension of the house. Special attention has been given to the form, detailing and crafting of the timber elements of the house, primarily using mahogany from certified sources of Simplemente Madera, and to the oval figure of the staircase which animates the interior in a delicate manner.
